| Cornfield School
The school is a large bungalow in a quiet residential area of Redhill. It was first
opened as a small independent school in 2003. The school is registered and
approved to take up to 19 (age 12 -18) students with emotional and behavioural
difficulties, and with or without statements of educational need. However,
many of our students are gifted and talented with academic aspirations, and
wanting to make up for interrupted schooling.
Although our core business has been with vulnerable looked-after young women
who live in one of Cornerways’ four residential homes, we are becoming the
first choice for parents of locally excluded or vulnerable students for the
following reasons:
We teach our students that there is no stigma here attached either to being "in
care", or where things may not have worked out in mainstream school. Our
school image, uniform, routines, curriculum, behaviour expectations and values
are those of an independent/ private school: parents and students like that there
is no stigma on school records for college applications or employment of having
attended a PRU (pupil referral unit).
We deliver genuine full time education and expect students to stay until the end
of year 11 and to take public examinations. Students want to attend, behave
well towards each other, and thrive in a very small, nurturing community of
learning.
The Headteacher, Jayne Telfer, holds the National Qualification for Headship.
There is a highly committed and qualified team of staff. The school received a
very positive pre-Ofsted inspection report in November 2005 saying that
everything about the school was good, particularly the teaching and learning,
behaviour, curriculum, quality of care given and the leadership and
management. Cornfield School is also the first independent school to achieve
the Healthy Schools award in Surrey.
