Cornfield School is registered and approved to take students with emotional and behavioural difficulties and with or without statements of educational need. However, many of our children have not been excluded from schools and are willing and wanting to learn.

When we choose children for Cornerways, we look at whether that child is ready and willing to learn again to value education and to want qualifications. A place at Cornerways and Cornfield School go hand in hand. Once they get there, our children like the routine of school.

Even if a child has been out of school for quite some time, any nerves about meeting new people or having missed lots of schooling quickly disappear. The child will see that our school is a safe and friendly place to be with everyone in class getting along with their learning. A typical class size is 4 students with a teacher and teaching assistant. In addition the school has its own pastoral care team and a special educational needs officer. We also give individual help for those with reading and spelling difficulties. In such a small community any signs of bullying or potential unkindness would be noticed and dealt with straight away.

Students move around the school to different classrooms as in mainstream secondary school. We teach English, Maths, Science, ICT, PHSE, Citizenship, Art, Design Technology, Music and PE. Older students enjoy the work related work experience and running our own café at the YMCA.
